My Areca palm picture (Dypsis lutescens) (current picture) Palm trees that started growing in March 2019

Dypsis lutescens's nicknames are various such as golden cane palm, areca palm, yellow palm, butterfly palm, bamboo palm.

It is often called Areca palm in Korea. In this article, the name is mainly intended to be unified as Areca palm.

The origin of Areca palm

If you know the geographical characteristics and climate of the area where the plant grow, you can know how to grow the plant.

1. [An area where Areca palm grows]

  • Endemic to the northeastern coastal region between Mahanoro and Antalaha in Madagascar, Africa
  • The part marked on the map below is the habitat of Arekaya.

2. [Climate]

  • Average annual temperature: 19°C ~ 31°C
  • Rainfall of 62mm to 275mm during 1 year

※ Unlike the habitat of the Grandidieri baobab tree (this plant is also home to Madagascar), it rains relatively more in summer.

(If you want to know more about the climate of Antalaha in southwestern Madagascar, please visit the website. It's really detailed.)

3. [Place of habitat]

  • Native to the white sandy forest near the sea
  • Sometimes rocks, even near low-lying rivers

Growing the plant is enough with knowledge.

Characteristics of Areca palm

The pictures on the left are the Areca palm I raise, and the right is a completely large picture of Areca palm taken at a museum in Korea.

1. [Roots]

  • It's just a normal root.

2. [Stem]

  •  The bigger the size, the thicker it becomes like a bamboo.
  • There are a lot of dots and this is a normal feature of Areca palm. (This does not play any role. It's just a characteristic of the Areca palm.)

3. [Leaves]

  • The leaves are thin and soft.
  • [Important thing]  Thin leaves mean that leaves are mainly used for photosynthesis without storing water.

From the appearance characteristics, it seems that there is not much ability to store water. I water the most and often among the plants I grow. (It's almost the same as my Arabica coffee tree.)

Conclusion: how to grow Areca palm well

1. [Soil]

    • Soil with good drainage (Reason: it has to be grown indoors.)
    • Mix a lot of pearlite, chaffand so on. It makes the soil condition more rough for good drainage.

2. [Pot] A well-drained pot is good.

3[Light]

  • You should grow it in a suitable place for lighting.
  • Areca palm leaves dry brown when directly exposed to plants.
  • It seems to grow well even in half shade. But light is essential for the photosynthesis and health of plants.

4[Wind]

  • When you grow plants indoors, you have to ventilate them well. Let's use an air circulator or an electric fan!
  • Reason: Ventilation is absolutely essential indoors.
  • After watering, ventilation is also essential for soil drying.
  • Madagascar, Africa, is an island. It is also the fourth largest island in the world. It is said that it is an island and mainly grows on the coast, so it will be very well ventilated.

5. Spray the leaves (both front and back) about once a day or two. (Reason: To prevent pests)

  • [Important thing] This is absolutely necessary for Areca palm. A water shower on the leaves can prevent the leaves from browning. Areca palm is very fond of leaf spraying.

6. [Water]

    • It should be watered relatively often.
    • Make sure to get tap water in the bathtub and soak it after at least 8 hours.
    • It's a plant that lived in a hot area, so let's avoid cold water. (I purposely put hot water in the bathtub and water it after at least eight hours.)
    • [Important thing] I check the condition of the potted soil using disposable wooden chopsticks. I put wooden chopsticks into the potted soil and remove them. If there is little soil, water the plants.
    • [Important thing] Areca palm leaves begin to droop when water is hungry. You have to water it then. It is a plant that directly expresses the lack of water.
Thanks to this plant, I water other plants in this way.
(Before that, I quickly watered it with a shower head just like the tap water.
    • [Important thing] Areca palm reacts sensitively to the fluorine component (cavity prevention component) in tap water. This plant also accumulates salt only in some leaves to live. When the leaves accumulate salt, the branches dry out and die

My areca palm is a leaf affected by fluoride

7. [Mind] If you decide to grow a plant, you need the passion and responsibility not to kill the plant. (I recommend you to search for how to raise plants.)

A surprising and amazing fact that I discovered while investigating the Areca palm!

Areca palm is endangered in its original habitat in Madagascar, Africa.

It's a palm tree that's famous for its foliage plants all over the world. Areca palm is such an ironic fate.

In fact, it was NASA's role that the Areca palm could be universal worldwide. NASA published a study on plants that could purify the air in an enclosed space station, and the number one air purification capability was the Areca palm (this was the decisive factor that even I grew this plant)

In addition to the functional aspect, if you look at the Areca palm and stare at it, it makes you feel somewhat exotic. (I get peace of mind.) You should always be with me in the future!
