A brief introduction before the seed germination process

1. Adansonia rubrostipa: It is a baobab tree native to southwestern Madagascar in Africa. It is the smallest baobab tree among the baobab trees. (Even if it's small, the grown baobab tree is 5-20m long.)

※ [Reference] It's not pony, which means smallest, but it's called fony baobab tree, which means it's fake

2. Adansonia gregorii: It is the only baobab tree that grows naturally in Australia. It is native to northwestern Australia and named in honor of Australian explorer Augustus Gregory.

The fony baobab tree is expressed as a range that grows larger than the Gregorii baobab tree. It must be based on average height.

This isn't important, so let's move on~~!

Rubrostipa(fony) & Gregorii baobab tree seeds germination challenge (Failure Episode)

I tried the same thing as the grandidieri baobab tree last time. All the seeds failed to germinate.

[Part 1] Baobab tree seeds germination Challenge 'Adansonia grandidieri'

A brief introduction before the seed germination process The most widely distributed baobab tree is the Adansonia digitata species. The baobab tree mentioned in the book The Little Prince is also th..

By the way... Why did I fail that I did the same thing as the Grandidieri baobab tree? I'll have to find out the cause.

Analyze the cause of seed germination failure

For your information, this reflects my subjective point of view based on observations. Please take that into consideration.

1. It was not right to place seeds in water above 80°C for 24 hours.(Especially the rubrostipa (fony) baobab tree)

  • Adansonia rubrostipa (fony) seeds lack the ability to withstand high temperatures than Adansonia grandidieri. (It became a little soft after the seeds were soaked.)
  • But Adansonia gregorii seeds were hard  after the seeds had been soaked.

2. The peeling of the seeds failed.

  • The baobab seeds have two layers of outer and inner bark.(Grandidieri baobab tree seeds could be peeled in two layers.)
  • [Important thing]  It is vulnerable to mold if you peel it enough to reveal the skin. It's better to peel off only one layer.
  • Rubrostipa (Fony) baobab seeds are relatively soft and weak than other baobab seeds.
  • Gregorii Baobab seeds are hard.

The above pictures show the seeds of the Rubrostipa baobab tree soaked in water and then peeled. Especially, that one showed all the flesh and I cut it with my fingernails. That black seed eventually peeled off only one layer.
The pictures below show the seeds of the Gregorii baobab tree soaked in water and then peeled.

3. Put all the seeds in one disposable container. (Let's listen to that quote. "Don't put your eggs in one basket.")

4. I missed the timing to plant the seeds in the soil.

  • One gregory baobab seed could have succeeded, but it failed because it took the timing to plant it in the soil late.

One seed from the left Gregorii Baobab tree had a slight reaction.

5. The weather was different.

  • It was late spring weather at the time of the germination of the seeds of the Grandidieri baobab tree.
  • Rubrostipa (fony) & Gregorii Baobab tree seeds germination was attempted in early August. In Korea, it is hot and humid due to the rainy season or typhoon in summer.
  • [Important thing]  It is recommended to avoid germination of baobab seeds during high temperature and humid periods (rainy season, summer). Seeds are prone to decay at this time. Of course, winter is too cold to be recommended.
  • [Important thing]  It is recommended to try seed germination in spring or autumn. I prefer spring to autumn. If seed germination succeeds in spring, it can grow to some extent and then pass the cold winter. Autumn has a relatively short period of time.

6. It may be a problem with the seeds themselves in the first place (such as the genetic and condition of the seeds themselves or the harvested seeds are old or the seed storage method is not good.)

7. My hubris... The seeds of the Grandidieri baobab tree had a high success rate. I was conceited. I thought all the seeds of the baobab tree would be the same.

In this article, I wrote down my failed seeds germination episode. If I analyzed my own causes I should try it again. Next time, I'll write a re-challenge.

I'm serious about plants!
